Network attack thwarted; changes being introduced to further bolster network security
Yesterday, April 30 at 15:30 CET, there was a second attempted attack on the Everscale network.
👤 This attempt was of the same nature as the recent one and consisted of the attacker creating a great deal of simple and cheap tasks for the network to execute. During the first attack, 220,866 transactions had been processed before the issue was noticed by users, and 135,810 more were in the queue. Fortunately, Everscale was able to detect this activity promptly and take steps to remedy the situation.
The problem behind actions of this nature is that, previously, these kinds of tasks were cheap for a bad actor to create but consumed a lot of node-validator resources.
👨‍💻 In response to this latest attempt to compromise the network, we have started rolling out hotfixes that address the issue by making operations of this kind extremely expensive. We are also introducing different optimization options for the code node to make sure all bases are covered.
🗣 These hotfixes are being worked into the network’s foundational code, further reinforcing the safety of the network and its users. Once all of the changes have been finalized, we will be publishing a full account of the attempted attack with comprehensive details on the steps taken to remedy the situation and prevent similar attempts in the future.
